AUT Corrosion Mapping

The use of Automated Corrosion Mapping systems utilizing mechanical scanners have been employed throughout many sectors of industry for rapid overview of equipment condition. This is often referred to as AUT Corrosion Mapping, C-Scan or Ultrasonic Corrosion Mapping. Ultrasonic Corrosion Mapping plots the interior surface of pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, and more. The systems are capable of acquiring actual wall thickness over large areas of vessels and piping while the system remains in operation. AUT Corrosion Mapping is also used for remaining life determinations as prescribed by the facility’s Mechanical Integrity program.

Applications for AUT Corrosion Mapping:

  • Internal corrosion, pitting, and erosion
  • Mid-wall or sub-surface indications like laminations, inclusions, and blisters
  • Locate and detect Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) and blisters

Flaws that AUT Corrosion Mapping can detect:

  • Measures flaws in the base material and show their position, extent and depth
  • Measures internal corrosion, pitting, and erosion
  • Detects pitting, general corrosion and laminar defects including inclusion, plate lamination and blistering
  • Assess pressure vessel and piping for blistering and Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC)

Advantages of AUT Corrosion Mapping include:

  • High degree of repeatability
  • Position and size data for every flaw can be compared for repeat scans of the same area to track flaw growth or corrosion rates both generally and for individual pits
  • Creates a top down visual illustration of damage
  • Create side view (cross sectional) visual illustration of damage

Limitation of AUT Corrosion Mapping include:

  • Accessibility of area that needs inspected
  • Surface cleanliness and roughness of part that needs inspected
