Laser Mapping

Laser Mapping is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a line of laser light. Reflector dots are placed all around the object.  Lasers reflect off the dots capturing a physical object’s exact size and shape into the computer world as a digital 3-dimensional representation.

3D laser scanning is best suited to the measurement and inspection of contoured surfaces and complex geometries.  A traditional measurement method or a touch probe could not obtain the massive amounts of data needed for an accurate description required for Laser Mapping.

Applications for Laser Mapping

The scanner is a surveying instrument ideal for a large range of applications:

  • Tank surveys including measurement of dents, floor ripple and slopes, settlement, and volume.
  • Settlement and other measurements to API-653, EEMUA-159 or as required.
  • Coke drum scans can determine bending, bulging, and lean.
  • Comparison of new and old nozzles and pipe spools to check the before installation fit.
  • Production of as-built measurement for refurbishment and replacement projects.
  • Volumetric dimensons of product stockpiles.

Advantages of Laser Mapping:

  • Non-contact measurement
  • Automated data acquisition
  • Interchangeable sensors allowing quick changeover to new barrels
  • Full-featured analysis and reporting functions
  • Provides reliable and accurate repeatable results which are traceable for future pipeline integrity analysis
  • Full-length bore mapping
  • Complete surface characterization
  • Photography quality bore and chamber image using laser video imaging

Limitations of Laser Mapping:

  • Expensive instrument
  • Actual set up of equipment is very labor intensive
  • Requires enough clearance from the surface to be modeled (about 18”)
